We all know how the tale of Romeo and Juliet ends, but the story of the Capulets and Montagues begins long before that fateful night. Long even before the infamous feud first draws blood. It begins in an abbey in the foothills of the Alps, where the young Caterina and Maria Grazia meet as children. They are so different and yet they grow to become sisters. Together they go from living a sheltered existence to navigating a brutal, reckless world beyond the cloister walls. As young ladies of Verona, they sustain each other through every turn that life takes until they are thrust into a rivalry that ends in heart–shattering grief. It is then that life takes the most unexpected turn for Caterina and Maria Grazia, the mothers of Romeo and Juliet.
